Rancilio Coffee Grinders
The Rancilio company, founded in Italy in the 1920s, is probably best known for its line of commercial espresso brewing products. However, a small product line of equipment for home use is also an important part of Rancilio’s product line. The two machines that make up Rancilio’s home line are the Rancilio Sylvia espresso machine and the Rancilio Rocky grinder.
There are two types of Rocky grinders – one with a doser, and one without. The model that includes a doser has a lever that will dispense about 7 grams of grounds into a portafilter. By using the doser, you will not have to measure out your grounds. Also, since the grounds are dropped directly into the portafilter, there is less of a mess since you are not transporting the grounds from place to place.
The Rancilio coffee grinder without a doser allows for some versatility. If you wanted to have many coffee grounds on hand for making large pots of coffee, or if you like to grind many beans at one time instead of having to perform that task every day, the doserless Rocky can meet those needs. Both Rancilio Rocky grinders are burr grinders, which are considered to be superior to blade grinders. Burr grinders operate by rubbing small burrs together in order to crush coffee beans into uniform pieces. The result is a consistent grind every time. The Rocky grinders have several different grind settings so that you can have coarse grounds for a French press, or fine grounds for brewing espresso.
A Rocky grinder costs approximate $350-$400, but the strength and durability of the machine quickly makes up for the high cost. It weighs approximately 17 pounds, making it extremely heavy for an appliance of its type. The motor alone weighs 12 pounds, and it is the same motor Rancilio used in one of its commercial-grade coffee grinders. The Rancilio Rocky grinder is suitable for being used for commercial purposes, so you can enjoy the capabilities of a commercial grinder in the comfort of your home.
