Illy espresso pods are referred to as easy serving espresso, or ESE for short. Each pods contains 7 grams of ground illy coffee. In addition to traditional espresso pods, illy also sells a patented capsule called iperEspresso. These are capsules that you would insert into an espresso machine similar to espresso pods; however, the brewing technique is what some people might consider to be revolutionary. Instead of a traditional percolation process, the iperEspresso capsules allow for a two-step extraction process to create the best tasting espresso possible. The first step of the extraction process is called iper-infusion, in which hot water goes under pressure and illy’s wonderful coffee flavor (not to mention the aroma) is extracted from the capsule. Emulsification is the second step. Coffee is forced through a valve at the bottom of the capsule, which creates a smooth texture and, of course, high-quality flavor. One unique feature of the iperEspresso capsules is that the coffee never touches the inside of your espresso machine, so you do not need to worry about buildup inside your espresso maker. Like illy espresso pods, iperEspresso capsules are available in medium, dark, and decaf roasts.
