Started in 1933 by Francesco Illy, the company’s approach to coffee is unique in that they feature only one blend, as opposed to other companies who create many different blends. This blend, composed of 100% Arabica coffee from countries like Ethiopia, Colombia, Costa Rica, Brazil, and India, is described by the company as being a “perfect blend.”
Just because illy focuses on one blend does not meant they have a cavalier approach to producing coffee. On the contrary, the company puts its heart and soul into fine-tuning its blend so that each cup its consumers drink is perfectly uniform. Illy employs liquorers, or coffee blenders, who take each batch of coffee through 8 tastings before including it in the blend to ensure perfection.
You may purchase illy coffee beans as whole beans or ground coffee for use in your espresso machine. Whole beans are packaged into 8.8 ounce cans and there are three roasts to choose from: medium roast, dark roast, and decaffeinated. The medium roast is a balanced roast, while the dark roast is more intense. The decaffeinated roast has the same flavor and aroma as the medium roast; however, the caffeine content is under .05%. You can tell the difference between the roasts based on the color of the cans’ lids. The medium roast has a red lid, the dark roast features a black lid, and the decaffeinated coffee is denoted with a green lid. Illy’s ground coffee features the same roasts as the whole beans. For those who prefer making coffee in an auto-drip coffee maker, illy sells specially ground coffee for this purpose, available in medium and dark roasts.
Illy espresso pods are unique inclusions to the company’s product line. These pods, which are referred to as ESE, or “easy serving espresso,” are filled with ground coffee and are meant for use in espresso machines that can use pods.
